New call for papers

New call for papers
This conference is conceived of as an accessible new forum for cutting-edge sociolinguistic research. It is open to a broad range of sociolinguistics researchers, including those working outside the Anglo-Western sociolinguistic tradition, who address the varying and rapidly changing modes of linguistic interactions in the highly diverse world of today. Following two realizations in Budapest, the event is now moving to another of the major Central European capitals, Prague. Coming from the European context, we are highly aware of the importance of perspectives from different corners of the world, including those not usually heard from.

The main themes of the conference are diversities, new media and language management. They reflect the most visible trends from both global and local perspectives: evolving diversity and the omnipresence of the new media in the contemporary social world. The dynamic character of diversity in contemporary societies may lead us to be more sensitive to the management of language and communication we are doing on an everyday basis. It may also make us increasingly contemplate our language use and communication practices overall. New media and their various genres represent spaces where we can very quickly and easily reflect upon language use, and use various modes to do so. Of course, the management of language and communication has always existed. What has evolved in recent years is its sociolinguistic analysis, driven, among others, by the changes continually happening around us.

Considering the wide range of research traditions and theoretical frameworks used in sociolinguistic research around the world, we invite contributions that address both the topics addressed above and all other relevant topics from any area of sociolinguistics.

Abstract submission
We invite abstract submissions for the following types of contributions:

1. Individual papers
Individual paper presentations will be allocated 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion.

2. Posters
Poster presentations will be allocated their own time slot during the conference. No printed posters will be presented; posters will be displayed on digital screens and thus can include multimodal materials (sound, video etc.).

3. Panels
Panels consist of 4–7 papers and a discussant’s contribution. Each will be allocated 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion after each paper. The discussant’s contribution may be shorter, leaving more time for discussion.

Abstracts, created in doc, docx or rtf format and consist of max. 300 words plus references, and should also contain 3–5 keywords. The abstracts should be submitted via the Conference Registration System by March 31, 2022. Panel convenors are asked to individually collect panel paper abstracts and submit them, together with the discussant’s name and a panel introduction (max. 500 words excluding references) in a single document.

Abstracts should include information on the theoretical framework, research questions, data and methods and summarize the main findings. The selection of papers for presentation at ICS.3 will be carried out by the Scientific Committee and the Organizing Committee.

Note on registration
First authors, poster presenters, panel convenors and other attending participants must register for the conference. Each participant may submit only one abstract as the first or sole author, but can be a second, or subsequent, co-author of another paper or papers.

Please note that this is a call for additional papers, after the conference was rescheduled to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Authors whose presentations have already been accepted do not need to resubmit their abstracts, unless they wish to submit an entirely new one.

Notes on publication
The conference organizers do not plan to publish conference proceedings. Authors seeking publication opportunities for their contributions are encouraged to discuss such options (including, but not limited to, special issues of journals and edited volumes inspired by conference topics) with their fellow participants.
